UNDP Workshop on Local Governance: Expanding Community Participation

Damascus, 21 February 2019 – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) organized a technical discussion with the Ministry of Local Administration in Damascus within the framework of the UN-inter Agency Task Force on Syria and its planning working Group.

The Workshop recognizes the critical role of Local Governance in meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and addressing the broader challenges related to the crisis in Syria. The aim of the workshop is to review and discuss critical aspects of Local Governance in Syria to see how it can be an effective mechanism for the welfare of all Syrians and to promote peace. The outcome will provide important input to the UN’s future planning for support to Syria.

The Workshop was opened by the UNDP Resident Representative a.i, Mr. David Akopyan with a key-note speech by the Minister of Local Administration and Environment. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Fayssal Mikdad further welcomed guests and encouraged for an in-depth technical discussion on Local Governance.

Some 100 participants are attending the workshop from several Sub-national and Local Administrations, including 3 Governors, 67 Local Council representatives, along with 4 NGOs/Faith based Organizations working on service delivery, international experts and UN representatives.
